Fully Operational Las Vegas Tunnel in 2020?

Fully Operational Las Vegas Tunnel in 2020?

December 29, 2019 1 By Looper

Elon Musk’s recent tweet caused a great commotion.

Musk wrote that the Las Vegas underground tunnel will be “hopefully fully operational in 2020”. The news sounds great but Elon had tweeted similar things regarding timetable for the tunnel previously and they turned out not to be true. Just like the tweet from March when he had stated that it could be operational by the end of 2019.

This transit project is worth $48.7 million and its preliminary construction began in September. Even if Musk’s predictions are wrong, the tunnel is bound to be completed before the 2021 Consumer Electronics Show.

The idea behind building this type of tunnels by the Boring Company is to alleviate traffic congestion in big cities, just like Las Vegas. The route starts in the Las Vegas Convention Center and goes all the way to the Strip. The final form of the project will consist of two tunnels. Each one of them will be about a mile long. You can read more about it here.

At this point, the tunnel is going to transport people in cars. Later on, the passenger pods called loops may also be in use. Those are being designed to carry between 8 and 16 passengers or a single vehicle and to have the ability to travel at 125-150 miles per hour. Finally, a hyperloop could be implemented as the fastest option. However, the hyperloop technology has to be improved and tested in order for this to happen.
